Orientation Sensor Controller

Miniature Drum Set
Portable 4 channels intelligent MIDI-solenoid driver. Small solenoids with 3 – 15 Ω resistance (a 3 V version is typically ~7 Ω) are driven by 5 V USB power, scaled with a 50 kHz PWM signal. The maximum current draw is limited to ~3 A.
Beat was developed for a Camp workshop with Sam Barker, taking place in the French Pyrenees in August 2023.

Building Blocks for Musical Devices
V2 devices are connected via a bi-directional full-duplex RS-422 serial connection. The connectors are called Plug and Socket. Additional wires might supply power and connect microcontroller's USB port to a USB host.
V2 devices are daisy-chained, a child device's Plug is connected to the parent device's Socket. The wire protocol carries the address of the device it talks to, the parent devices forward the messages to the host.
V2 devices are configured with a web browser. The firmware is updated using the web interface.

It samples the analog input signal from potentiometers, expression pedals, hall sensors or similar. It sends MIDI control change messages, and synthesizes notes with velocity according to the measured speed of change in the input signal. The TRS connection supplies 3.3 V which can be used to power the sensors.

16 Channels Intelligent Solenoid Controller
Solenoid power controller which adjusts to changes in the supply voltage and solenoid resistance.
It is driven by commands which specify the length in seconds and the power in watts of a solenoid trigger impulse. A typical value for a trigger of a glockenspiel-37 note is a 15 milliseconds and a 3 watts pulse. The controller calculates the PWM duty cycle using the measured solenoid resistance and the supplied voltage.
The controller constantly measures the supply voltage and solenoid resistance. Changes are visualized with the channel LEDs. To protect itself, it monitors the overall current it draws from the power supply and isolates channels which are short-curcuit.
